Product details

Product Name: Rhynchostylis Hybrid (Gigantea ‘Bao’ × Gigantea Sibling)
Common Group: Rhynchostylis Orchid
Plant Stage: Vegetative (Without Flower)
Plant Size: Medium
Fragrance Potential: Yes (when in bloom)

Taxonomy:

  • Family: Orchidaceae

  • Genus: Rhynchostylis

  • Hybrid Parentage: Rhynchostylis gigantea ‘Bao’ × Rhynchostylis gigantea (sib cross)

Botanical Description:
This hybrid is a selectively bred Rhynchostylis gigantea cross derived from the cultivar ‘Bao’ and a sibling plant, resulting in enhanced vigor and uniform growth traits. The plant exhibits the characteristic monopodial growth habit of Rhynchostylis, with thick, leathery, strap-shaped leaves arranged distichously along a short, robust stem. Leaves are deep green with a glossy surface, indicating strong photosynthetic capacity and good overall health.

The root system consists of large, fleshy aerial roots covered with a well-developed velamen layer, adapted for efficient moisture and nutrient absorption in epiphytic conditions. As the plant is currently non-flowering, it is in an active vegetative phase, suitable for establishment and acclimatization.

When mature and in bloom, this hybrid is expected to produce dense, pendulous inflorescences bearing numerous waxy flowers typical of R. gigantea, with strong fragrance inherited from both parents.

Specialty / Key Characteristics

  • Fragrance Excellence: Known for producing intensely fragrant flowers, a hallmark trait of Rhynchostylis gigantea, especially valued in ornamental orchid collections.

  • Genetic Stability: Sibling (sib) crossing enhances consistency in growth form and floral traits compared to open hybrids.

  • Vigorous Growth: Medium-sized plant with strong leaf and root development, indicating high adaptability and future flowering potential.

  • Collector’s Value: Suitable for serious orchid growers and collectors seeking premium Rhynchostylis hybrids with proven lineage.

  • Tropical Adaptation: Thrives in warm, humid environments with bright, filtered light, making it ideal for tropical and subtropical cultivation.

Cultivation Note:
Best grown mounted or in open, well-aerated baskets. Requires high humidity, good air circulation, and regular watering with adequate drying between cycles. Flowering typically occurs once the plant reaches full maturity.
