Product details

Bring refined greenery into your space with the charming Platycerium hillii ‘Dwarf’, a compact and elegant variety of the classic Staghorn Fern. Known for its smaller size and neatly shaped, forked fronds, this epiphytic beauty offers all the sculptural appeal of larger staghorns in a more manageable form. Native to Australia and closely related to Platycerium bifurcatum, this dwarf variety is perfect for apartments, small walls, and indoor plant displays.

Ideal for plant collectors seeking something unique yet easy to maintain, the Dwarf Staghorn Fern is both eye-catching and adaptable.

🌿 Platycerium hillii ‘Dwarf’ Care – Mounted

Light

  • Bright indirect light is ideal

  • Can tolerate gentle morning sun (1–2 hours)

  • Avoid harsh midday or direct afternoon sun

  • Indoors: near east- or north-facing window

Watering (Mounted Plants)

  • Soak entire mount in water for 10–15 minutes

  • Frequency:

    • 2–3 times per week in hot/dry weather

    • 1–2 times per week in cooler or humid conditions

  • Allow excess water to drain completely

  • Let moss dry slightly between waterings (never bone dry for extended periods)

Humidity

  • Prefers 60–80% humidity

  • Ideal for bathrooms, balconies, or near humidifiers

  • Mist lightly in dry climates (avoid constant wet fronds)

  • Ensure good air circulation to prevent rot

Temperature

  • Best range: 18–28°C (65–82°F)

  • Avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F)

  • Protect from cold drafts and heaters

Fertilizing

  • Use balanced fertilizer (NPK 19–19–19)

  • Mix ½ teaspoon in 1 liter of water

  • Apply:

    • Once every 2 weeks during active growth (spring–summer)

    • Once a month or stop during cooler months

  • Apply by soaking mount or gently pouring over roots/shield fronds

  • Flush with plain water monthly to prevent salt buildup

Mounting Medium

  • Use sphagnum moss, coco fiber, or tree fern fiber

  • Keep medium airy and well-draining

  • Replace moss if compacted, broken down, or retaining too much moisture

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Do not remove brown shield fronds (they protect roots and retain nutrients)

  • Trim only damaged or dead antler fronds

  • Avoid wiping fronds (natural fuzz protects from moisture loss)
