vanda × Aranda 'Peter Ewart' – Hybrid Orchid Cultivar

Taxonomic Classification:

  • Family: Orchidaceae

  • Genus: Vanda × Aranda

  • Cultivar: 'Peter Ewart'

Description:
The Vanda × Aranda 'Peter Ewart' is a striking intergeneric orchid hybrid known for its vivid coloration, floriferous nature, and robust growth. As a cross between Vanda and Aranda (itself a cross between Arachnis and Vanda), this cultivar exhibits the best traits of both parental lineages—producing large, showy blooms with exceptional durability and a preference for high-light environments.

Morphological Features:

  • Inflorescence: Erect to arching racemes, often bearing 8–15 blooms per spike.

  • Flowers: Large (8–10 cm in diameter), star-shaped, with broad petals and a waxy texture. Coloration ranges from deep magenta to violet with variable spotting or tessellation.

  • Leaves: Strap-like, leathery, and arranged in a distichous pattern typical of monopodial orchids.

  • Stem: Monopodial growth habit with a strong central stem; aerial roots are prolific and assist in moisture absorption from the air.

Habitat & Cultivation Requirements:

  • Light: High light levels (50–70% sunlight); partial direct sun recommended for optimal flowering.

  • Temperature: Warm-growing; ideal range 20–30°C (68–86°F).

  • Humidity: Prefers 60–80% relative humidity with good air circulation.

  • Watering: Frequent watering during active growth; roots should not remain soggy.

  • Medium: Often grown in baskets with coarse bark or mounted for optimal root aeration.

Blooming Season:
Blooms multiple times a year under optimal conditions, with individual flowers lasting up to 4 weeks.

Special Notes:
‘Peter Ewart’ is valued in horticulture for its vibrant aesthetic and hybrid vigor. It is a popular choice among collectors and commercial growers for use in tropical landscaping and orchid exhibitions.
