Aerides houlletiana
Species Orchid – Scientific Product Description
Aerides houlletiana Rchb.f. is a monopodial, epiphytic orchid species within the subtribe Aeridinae (Orchidaceae). The species is characterized by an erect to slightly arching stem bearing distichous, leathery, strap-shaped leaves with a shallowly bilobed apex. Aerial roots are thick, well-developed, and covered with multilayered velamen typical of epiphytic Aerides species.
Inflorescences are axillary and pendulous, emerging from the leaf axils and producing multiple flowers arranged in a loosely to moderately dense raceme. Flowers are medium-sized, waxy, and star-shaped. Sepals and petals are typically pale pink to lavender, often marked with deeper pink or purple spotting toward the base. The labellum is three-lobed, with a more intensely colored mid-lobe and a short spur containing nectar.
Floral fragrance is present, most pronounced during daylight hours, reflecting adaptation to insect pollination. Flowering generally occurs seasonally, with inflorescences persisting for several weeks under favorable conditions.
This species is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows as an epiphyte in lowland to montane forests, contributing to the biodiversity of tropical forest orchid communities.
